William Tecumseh Sherman

After the successful Atlanta Campaign (more) and The March to the Sea, Sherman returned to a hero's welcome in Washington D. C. When Ulysess S. Grant, his commanding officer and friend, became President of the United States, Sherman accepted the position of Commanding General of the United States Army.
