|Popular State Road 140 takes Georgians from Highway 27 north of Rome (Rome history) to I-85, but a few miles northwest of Mansell Road, where State Road 140 crosses Georgia Highway 400 lies what is perhaps the most unique site of this road that crosses through the heart of the agricultural belt of north Georgia -- a castle.
And this is no ordinary castle. A stone wall with wrought-iron fencing and a huge wrought iron gate protect the inner sanctum. There is a moat -- yes, a moat -- around the outside that is actually a swimming pool (you can see the ladders if you look closely). The moat completely circles what locals simply call "The Castle." It has been a landmark for those in northwest Fulton County for more than a decade.
The Castle is not open for touring, but you can park your car and take a look at just one of the interesting things we find on the side of the road in Georgia.
From Atlanta: Take GA. 400 north to the Mansell Road exit. Turn left. Follow GA State Road 140 (Mansell Rd.) to Houze Rd. Turn right and continue 4 miles. (Houze Road becomes Arnold Mill Road). .2 miles past the Kroger on the right, the Castle looms on the left.
