County:Cobb City:Marietta Type:National Park, Battlefield Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, west of Marietta, Georgia, was the site of two major battles of the War Between the States (Civil War). Skirmishes were fought in the area from mid-June until July 2, 1864. On June 22, 1864 Major General Joseph Hooker's XX Corps and elements of Major General John Schofield's Army of the Ohio battled Hood's Corps (Lt. Five days later William T. Sherman ordered a broad frontal assault against the entrenched Confederate position on Kennesaw Mountain.
